#SummerRefresh: Balance

This week’s topic is Balance brought to you by Sara at She Cooks, She Crafts, She Runs.


As with anything in life, things can quickly get out of hand.  Think you need to spend every moment out of work at the gym?  That’s excessive.  Obsess over every single bite that enters your mouth?  You will become miserable and drive everyone around you crazy with your obsession.
Sometimes it’s hard for us to recognize that healthy can become UNhealthy when the balance topples.  The yin and the yang must be in sync for things to truly run smoothly.
One of my favorite ways to even myself out is yoga.  It stretches out muscles that I work in running, biking, and strength training.  I have an opportunity to work on meditating.  I work on slowing down.  I am so much more flexible since I started.  The reasons can go on and on.

My goals for this week:
  • Stretch and foam roll. Every. Single. Day!
  • Drink water
  • Drink more water
  • Stretch some more

Yep, that about sums it up. My husband told me I’ve been twitching and kicking in my sleep and I’ve been sore. Guess it just dawned on me I haven’t really been stretching or using my foam roller since starting marathon training.

Got a new record at the gym this morning for the stair master: 30 minutes! Then abs and weights.

#SummerRefresh: Mindfulness

When I first saw the topic for this week, I wasn’t sure how mindfulness factored in. The more I thought about it and after seeing the discussions for this week, I get it and it’s big! We have to pay attention to our bodies, that’s what it’s all about.

It’s about being mindful of our eating, our emotions, our thoughts, our breathing and our body. Each day is a different topic, join the Living+ page on Google to stay up to date. The topics this week are brought to you by Kim Nicol.

Monday: Being mindful of breathing. I think this means literally and also means take a break, relax, leave the stress at the door.



Tuesday: Being mindful of your body. Rest, whether injured or not. Know when it’s enough.



Wednesday: Eating. It’s so important, but sometimes the hardest thing to control. I take it a day at a time. Some days are good, some days aren’t. Being mindful of what I put in mouth might be the most important thing!


Thursday: Heart, being mindful of your emotions. This is a hard one too. Emotions are a roller coaster ride. Being able to exercise and have an outlet for it, helps. Hopefully Kim has some great tips!



Friday: Thoughts. Being mindful of our thoughts is so important to our health. Don’t beat yourself up, learn to be happy with who we are, what we are becoming, what we have achieved so far.

  • This starts week 3 of marathon training. So far, so good. Main difference is a 4th day of running. I’ve done that before but not at 4:30am!
  • Water: always important, I’m more mindful of it now.
  • Food: I haven’t been much more hungry than normal, but my nutrition isn’t great. I start the week out good then it ends poorly. I wish this wasn’t such a struggle for me. I always feel guilty after making those bad choices. Not a good cycle.
  • Speed work: It’s going good, 4 miles run/walk intervals each Thursday. I’m hoping to see those results this fall!
  • Allstate Half is October 26. I’m looking for a PR, but I haven’t decided on a number yet.

#SummerRefresh Focus on Nutrition

This week we are starting a new series with Fit Approach called #SummerRefresh. The topic this week is nutrition written by Sara at She Cooks, She Crafts, She Runs.


It’s August and Fit Approach has a big initiative this month called the #SummerRefresh.  So we are taking cues from them and helping you follow along with their cool challenges.  If you want to participate please join the Google+ community Living+.

For this first week we are focusing on nutrition.  So I’ve decided to take their challenges and make it easier for you to follow along.  I’ve gone day by day for this week and given you examples to help you make the challenges.

Meatless Monday

  • Salmon:  I love this super simple take on salmon on lemon baked.
  • Crab cakes:  Here’s some healthier versions from Cooking Light
  • Tofu:  This Spicy Garlic Tofu recipe looks pretty yummy for such a typified meal

Take your lunch to work Tuesday

Whatever you made the night before…heat it up!  For example, make a salmon sandwich by putting it between 2 slices of bread with some roasted red pepper and dijon mustard.  The crab cakes, lay one on top of a spinach salad with some baby tomatoes and a splash of balsamic vinegar and EVOO.
You can look in your fridge and grab and go.  It’s funny the different combos you can come up with.  Need some ideas?  Leave a blog comment and I’ll come up with something for you!

What I ate Wednesday

Write down what you eat all day.  It’s funny all the things we don’t even realize we put in our mouths!

Thirsty Thursday

Water is so very important.  Especially this time of year.  The easiest way to stay hydrated that I’ve found is to carry a bottle of water around with me.  It becomes a habit and you find yourself almost addicted to getting a sip whenever your heart desires.

What is Paleo you ask?

Well don’t worry, I didn’t know before this post either!  I have just seen bits and pieces around Pinterest and Facebook.  From what I gather, it’s like a caveman diet, you only eat what the caveman had access to.  Here’s some graphics that help explain.
