14 miles is….done!

Yep, 14 miles! I finally broke past 13.1. I’ve never tried to, wasn’t sure I could. It’s definitely a confidence booster to accomplish a longer distance.

It all started when I said out loud I was hoping to run my first full marathon this year, in December. I’m a part of a great running club and Moms Run This Town so I have lots of training partners! Our normal group is training for the Patriot Half Marathon which is on Memorial Day. It’s a crazy, hilly course that goes all over our town. Training run for today was 8 miles for everyone else, 14 for me and one other girl, hopefully my future marathon training partner!

14miles

I use this training plan for my half marathons, it’s a beginner plan. I never thought about changing it, didn’t think I needed to. It was brought up today that I should be running past 13.1 in training for a half now, that it might/should help with a PR. So, in a few weeks it’ll be 15, then I’ll taper down before the race. I’m doing research for a intermediate/advanced half training plan now.

I had to work today also, so my day started at 4:20AM to get these miles in…I’m having a hard time staying awake now.

I’ve been hungry all day today, just kinda snacking, and trying to be good about food choices. I’ve gotten lots of protein today. Need some carbs for dinner.

What half marathon training plans do you use? Do you run past 13.1 while training for a half?

Did you #EarnYourShower today? I did!

WIAW on Thursday

No, I didn’t look at the calendar wrong. I realize it’s Thursday, but I worked yesterday and it was too hard to get a post out. So, my What I Ate Wednesday is Thursday this week.

Started my day with a 5 mile run at 5AM, it was cold. And it sleeted on us the last 3 minutes or so. Have I said I’m done with the cold? It was 69 degrees for Tuesday’s 5AM run.

My post run snack was a Fiber One bar and this yummy Isopure protein drink.

I had breakfast with a friend, it wasn’t the healthiest but it was a great time to catch up. I had my favorite migas! I am not a big breakfast eater but I love migas and these are good, really good. I really wish I had remembered to take a picture of it. I’ll have to remember next time!

For lunch (late afternoon snack) I made a protein shake at home, I was still pretty full from breakfast. Tonight is Book club so it’ll be pizza and salad for me.

I did make a trip to the Run On! store today. Ally “stole” my Newton’s. She’s been needing a pair of running shoes and she tried out both my Newton’s and Asics to see what she liked and decided she like the Newton’s. I hadn’t put very many miles on them yet so it worked out. I need another pair to start rotating in, I’m about to bump my miles up for marathon training. In 2 days I’ll run my first run past 13.1….14 miles it is. Yikes! So, I ended up with a pair of Brooks Ravenna’s in a lovely shade of purple, grabbed some energy chews, body glide and a hand held water bottle for short summer runs.

First off, if you aren’t entering giveaways you are missing out! I’ve won 2 recently – Quest Protein bars and Isopure Protein drinks. I’m a fan of the Isopure, still taste testing the Quest bars. Thanks Laura @ Fit Running Mama for hosting the giveaway!

These drinks have 40g of protein, 160 calories, 80mg of Sodium and 45mg of potassium and 0 carbs. I’ve tried the punch, the green apple and one other I can’t remember but the punch is my favorite so far. **I won these drinks and was not required to write this review.

I’ll definitely be stocking up on these!

We have a winner and a not-so-great run

This morning was my first run since Sunday. I would have thought my legs would be plenty rested, but they had other plans. Let’s just say I’m glad it’s done. I should be good to go for Saturday! I have a 6 mile training run followed by a 5k race.

My daughter apparently inherited my need for shoes – that need has changed from every day shoes to running/workout shoes.  At the RnR expo last week, Luke’s Locker had these fabulous Nike Free’s on clearance, so guess who pooled their money together to buy said shoes? Yep, it’s nice that my 11 year old and I wear the same size. She wears them to school, I wear them to the gym. She will probably grow out of them soon!

Thank you to everyone that participated in the Empower Fitness! Congratulations to Eliza K! You should have an email from me!

What I ate (and did) Wednesday

It’s What I Ate Wednesday! I’m a creature of habit so I had my usual breakfast of bagel, peanut butter and banana. I was going to eat Almond butter but apparently I put it in the pantry and it’s supposed to be refrigerated. So, I’ll have to buy another jar.

I went to the gym after dropping Ally at school. I was absolutely starving when I left there, I drank my water, ran my errands and tried not to focus on food. I grabbed a smoothie from Smoothie King about 11 and then had a snack after that. As I’m typing this, I’m hungry again.

I had a great workout at the gym, cardio and lots of weights, lunges and ab work. I hope I can walk tomorrow!

82 minutes = 680 calories!

I’ve been lacking on my planking, back on the train today!

I grabbed a new snack at the store today. Special K is how I started my journey 2 years ago, I was eating their protein bars as meal replacements for about the first 2-3 weeks to break my bad lunch habits. My co-worker found these new popcorn snacks and they are pretty good!

Wednesday is also usually errand day, so of course there were errands and….taxes!  I should really pay someone to do them! It’s also eat out night and Ally chose Culver’s so I know dinner won’t be a perfect choice. It happens sometimes, my lifestyle change is not about restricting foods. That will lead to failure. It’s why nothing ever worked for me before.

I am getting back in the habit of entering my food in My Fitness Pal. Anyone use that app? It’s really great to help keep you on track.

And another snack to satisfy my craving for chocolate and caramel.

I also got a new toy today, a Samsung ChromeBook. It’s going to take some getting used to, but so far I really like it. It was really easy to set up and it’s light. I will like being able to carry it around a lot easier than our other laptop. We are Mac people but I just needed something smaller and easier to travel with and to use for blogging.

It’s also only 4 days until Rock N’ Roll!  Can’t wait to show you what I’m wearing.

Great run and Empower Fitness review!

One of those great runs!

It’s not often but once in a while a run happens to be great! Everything is in line – pace and breathing, I feel like I could just keep running! I had one of those runs this morning, it was “only” 4.28 miles but at a sub-10 pace and it was great!

 Meal prepping

I’m not a regular at prepping meals, it just happens sometimes. Sunday afternoon was one of those days. My husband grilled chicken and pineapple and I made rice and veggies for us to eat for a few days. We’ll see what we come up with for next week!

Empower Fitness

Has anyone ever used a Kettle Bell? I hadn’t until a few weeks ago when I got one from Empower Fitness. I always look at it sitting there in the gym, thinking what could I do with it? I’ve used a medicine ball with my Russian twists but not the kettle bell.

I got the adjustable one, so you can change the weight around and have anywhere from 5, 8, or 12 pounds. I’ve also used just the 4 pound add on with my sit-ups. It’s so easy to change the weight, once you figure out the “trick” to it. Each weight locks into the other.

My husband had it out of the box pretty quick, luckily I had already taken pictures of it!

*I was not financially compensated for this post. I received a sample for review purposes. The opinions are completely my own based on my experience.*

We also finally convinced our 11 year old daughter that lifting light weights will help her softball swing, so guess who’s also been using it. I take all the weights off and she uses the Kettlebell by itself which is 5 pounds.

The whole family is enjoying this new addition to our workout routines.  Watch for an announcement soon, you will have a chance to win something from Empower!

Random stuff and a winner!

This is a random post and we have a winner. I know you are probably more excited about that than my randomness!

Today’s workout was a 5 mile run, it was actually one of the best 5 milers I’ve had in a while. It was still colder than I wanted it to be, but it was a good run!

It’s a Tuesday version of what I Ate Wednesday! I wanted to share what I made for dinner tonight, it was so yummy! I’m loving my rice cooker and steamer. It’s the simple things in life. I saute’d the chicken in the coconut oil and spices, steamed the veggies, rice and pineapple. Right after I took this picture I cut it all up and mixed it together.

I just finished watching The Biggest Loser from last night! I’m excited for the finale. (Spoiler alert…I’m rooting for Danni!)

We had over 650 entries for the Albion Fit go long top. Congratulations Jodi Stuber! Watch for an email from me.

What was your workout today? Did you eat anything yummy and healthy?

Starting out

Some of this is on the “About Me” page but I get asked a lot about how I lost my weight and how I got into running. It didn’t happen over night, it took years of me being over weight and “trying” (not really) to lose weight. I told myself I was a happy person, I didn’t need my world to revolve around food and how many calories, fat, etc I was eating. Truth was it did revolve around food, but in a bad way. I ate whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. Never thinking about the consequences of my eating, or the example I was setting for my daughter. I ate my meals like it was my last one.

Not sure why it finally clicked but in June 2011 (the 13th to be exact) I actually started my journey. Here are a few things I changed right away.

  • Started walking
  • Went cold turkey on cheeseburgers and fries for one WHOLE month.
  • Switched flour tortillas for corn (it’s the little things)
  • Started eating the Special K protein bars for lunch, usually with fruit, veggies, cheese, etc.
  • Quit drinking Dr. Pepper
  • Starting drinking water and lots of it!
  • Cut my portions down
  • Started eating breakfast. I’m still not a big breakfast eater, but I’m trying.
  • Protein Shakes
  • I started tracking all my food and exercise in My Fitness Pal.  My user name is howmyworldruns, feel free to add me.

It was hard at first, really hard. But once I started seeing results it became easier. I tell myself every day I am happy, I am healthy. I will not go back to being 42 pounds overweight!

I walked 5-6 days per week, 4 miles at least with a friend. We walked all summer that year. When the time changed, it was harder for us to walk during the week so I started trying to run. More on that here.

I still struggle with eating the right food. I don’t have any special diets like Vegan, Vegetarian and Paleo. I just tried to eat the best way I could. I still eat almost all the same foods I just cook them differently and eat less of it. I have been trying new veggies. I still don’t like asparagus. I did recently try spaghetti squash and I will try it again. I do love Broccolini!

I have days when I don’t make the right choices, I just know the next day is a new day. I can begin again.

I love being able to encourage others. I love that I have made new friends in this journey. I love that I am a good example for Allyson. I think I have made my little family proud of me. I never thought I could achieve anything at my age, let alone be running half marathons and be considering a full marathon. I never thought I’d get up before the sun to run. I don’t get up that early for anything but vacation!

Thank you for reading this and for allowing me to share my story with you. Please feel free to ask questions or offer advice. It’s always accepted!

Nike Training today

Went for a short warm up run today. Here I am in my glow in the dark shirt, can’t miss me coming!

I downloaded the Nike Training app a few months ago and I really like it. They have 15-45 minute workouts, you can play your music in the background, the app tells you when to do something new. There’s also a picture of it. You can always change it up if something is too easy or difficult for you. There are several levels and you earn badges! Here’s a screen shot of part of what I did today.

Molly hid under the recliner. Guess I scared her.

Ally and I got a new yoga mat, guess who did not pick this one out? At least it matches my shoes!

Lunch was home made taco soup. Basically I cook ground meat (sometimes turkey) and dump frozen corn and canned beans and ro-tel tomatoes in a pot and cook it. It’s pretty good!

Tomorrow is another 5 miles, looking forward to 7 miles this weekend. Slowly building my endurance back up. Have a great day everyone!

Cold morning run

I picked a nice, cold morning for my first early morning run in a month. Ran 5.44 miles at 5Am today and it went well, walked just a little bit of it. It was a hilly route but it felt great to be back out there!

I also dusted off my Brooks Pure Flow running shoes to give them another try. I fell in love with these and bought them in March and they don’t have too many miles on them. Someone told me I probably couldn’t run long distances in them, so they’ve been sitting on the shelf taunting me. I am going to see what kind of mileage I can put on them!

It’s not a great picture. (I seriously need to learn to take pictures of myself!)

Since I did not eat well this last Thanksgiving (was I alone??) I decided to have a protein shake for dinner last night. I LOVE Smoothie King but since I had a tub of protein powder sitting on my kitchen counter I figured I’d make it at home. I use bananas, frozen strawberries and sometime frozen peaches.

Anyone else have yummy protein shake recipes?

Half Marathon Training

I’m in week 6 of my half marathon training for the Healdsburg Half in October. I started over with this training since I didn’t keep my mileage up in the summer. I am running a little faster and am able to keep it up for longer periods of time. I think running all summer in the heat definitely helped that. I am LOVING these cooler temps!

Allyson has been running with me again, she took the summer off. There are a few races coming up she wants to participate in and of course she wants my retired Nike’s. I went to Luke’s Locker and got fitted for running shoes for the 1st time. And it turns out I’ve been running in the wrong or just not the best shoes for me. So, I am currently trying out a brand new pair of bright purple Mizuno’s!

Why I run:

  • To be healthy / stay healthy
  • Stress relief
  • I actually like it (really, I do!)
  • Pasta
  • To be an example to Allyson
  • I have made new friends!
  • Love seeing my new friends reach their running goals
  • Race bling
  • To make and meet goals

Why do you run? Feel free to leave your comments below!
