Marathon Monday: training update + Nuun review

The Dallas Marathon is in 2 weeks! It’s taper time! I cannot believe it is already here. It’s been a rough training season, but I think I am finally ready.

marathon training

Training last week:

Monday: Light gym workout, stretching, abs, 10 minutes on the elliptical and sauna

Tuesday: Track workout, 8×300 with 200 recovery, 2 mile warm up, 2 mile cool down

Wednesday: Rest day

Thursday: 15 miles

Friday: Shopping (this would be cross training!)

Saturday: 4 miles

Sunday: Gym day, elliptical, abs, upper body weights and sauna

I’ve been using Nuun to hydrate for a few years now. I’ve used it exclusively this training season to see if it that alone will keep my dehydration headaches away. Between water and Nuun tabs it’s been a pretty good season.  Nuun sent me these 3 flavors to start with and I’ve already gone through them and purchased more.

I received free product to try. I was asked to write a review. All opinions are my own.

Nuun tabs

I really like the Lemonade and the Lemon Lime. I do mix up my Nuun the night before, it helps get the fizzies out and gets it good and cold for the next morning. I suggest leaving the top open though. The tab has sugar-free electrolytes that dissolve in water. The tube makes it easy to throw in a gym bag. You can also break them in half for smaller bottles. I will throw a few in a baggy to carry on race day.

Nuun hydration

I grabbed this Nuun energy recently but haven’t tried it yet. I’ll get on that so I can let you know if I like it too!

Nuun Energy

Nuun Hydration has a Cyber Monday sale with 30% today! There’s free shipping and $20 four-packs. Grab a friend or 3 and share a pack to get started.

On Thanksgiving morning my group ran their long run so we wouldn’t have to over the weekend. We all definitely earned our turkey that day! I also earned a shirt and medal for a virtual Turkey Trot with through our running club. Last years shirt is one of my favorite long sleeve t-shirts.

I did a little Black Friday shopping again this year. It’s a shop til ya drop day for me and my friend Alisha. I snagged an early present for my family, the Nutri Bullet. I love it!

And my new MRTT tank and car magnet came in, so exciting!

Marathon Monday: training update

I know you all haven’t heard much from me lately. My family has had some heartache these last 2 months and I just haven’t been blogging. I have been running, with the exception of one week off. I’m still training for my upcoming races, but I’m unsure about setting goals for them just yet. Part of me is just plain scared to.

Here’s what you may have missed:

It is just under 3 weeks until the Dallas Marathon, that’s #2 of 3 coming up quick!

marathon training

Training last week:

Monday: Rest day

Tuesday: Track, 2 mile warm up, 6×400 (1:47-1:53) with 400 recovery,1 mile cool down

Wednesday: Gym day, light weights, elliptical, stretching and sauna

Thursday: 8 miles, 8:53 pace

Friday: 5 miles, 10:06 pace

Saturday: 20 miles, 9:38 pace

Sunday: Rest and recover!

Saturday’s 20 miler was tough. I started out feeling great and then about mile 17 I was done. My legs were so mad at me. I know marathon training is about training your legs to run when they are tired, but I think the 3 days in a row caught up to me. By Saturday night everything hurt, but miraculously Sunday I was pretty much back to normal.

I’ve been using Nuun Hydration before and during my run and also started using Advocare Rehydrate Gels. I do not like the consistency or taste of Gu or the other products out there. I’m really liking the Advocare version, it’s just the packaging is a little big.

20 miles is no easy feat. I enjoyed breakfast afterward with my training partner and friend. We might have had a mimosa as well.

For the life of me I cannot figure out why we didn’t remember to take a picture at the lake. It was so pretty that morning.

me and alisha after 20

It was Alish’a longest distance so naturally I had to try something new that day as well, guacamole. Yep, I’m the weird one that doesn’t eat avocados or guacamole. It wasn’t too bad, the salt covered chips probably helped too. I might be convinced to try it again.

We are finally settling into the new house, got a few more things done this weekend. There is still a lot to do and now it’s almost time to get the Christmas stuff out! I do not decorate for Christmas until Thanksgiving is over, usually sometime that Friday after, then it gets put back up usually by New Year’s Eve.

Do you eat guacamole?

When do you decorate for Christmas?

Happy running!

Marathon Monday: training update

I am in the throes of marathon training. Not really sure where/when the plan began, I’ve been training to train at a faster pace for a while. This summer has worn me out and made me feel like I couldn’t run another step. Part of that was heat and part was just plain emotions and being busy with the move.

So, with 12 weeks until my next marathon, it’s time to get myself in gear!

marathon training

Marathon #2: Dallas Marathon, December 14

Marathon #3: New Orleans Rock N’ Roll, January 25

You may recall the Dallas Marathon 2013 was supposed to be marathon #1 but it was cancelled due to Icemageddon. So, Cowtown 2014 became marathon #1. For a while I wasn’t sure I wanted to run another full (sometimes I still question my sanity in this department).

At any rate, I’m training and I cannot wait for the temps to cool off. Maybe I won’t feel like a loser who can’t breathe or run.

Sunday: Rest day

Monday: Gym day, upper body weights, abs, stretching and sauna

Tuesday: Track day, 12×200 with 200 recovery, 2 mile warm up and 1 mile cool down

Wednesday: 2.25 miles with Ally, exploring the streets in our new neighborhood.

Thursday: 8 miles, 2 mile warm up, 3×1 mile at (about) 8:00 minute pace, with 1/2 mile recovery, 2 mile cool down

Friday: Rest day

Saturday: Gym day, upper body, elliptical and abs.

Saturday was supposed to be a 12 mile run. By Friday afternoon, my heel was hurting with every single step. I knew I was not going to be able to run so I hit the gym instead. Not sure what I did, but thinking it was bruised. It already feels better this morning. The plan is to hit the track tomorrow.

I’m getting food and hydration back in check. I did fairly well this summer, despite everything going on. But the last 3-4 weeks have been ridiculous. If it’s not nailed down, I’ve been eating it. Not kidding. My favorite hydration right now is Nuun. It seems to keep the headaches at bay. I drink it before, during or after a run.

Did you workout this weekend?

What upcoming races are you training for?

Happy running,

January Jumpstart Day 31: Month in review

This is it! Did you hit your goals for the month. I think I did pretty good. I got my nutrition back on track, clothes are fitting a little better. I was able to add an extra day in the gym.

Today is normally my rest day, but I have a gym date with my hubby tonight. YAY! I will take it easy on my legs since I have 20 miles tomorrow!

January Jumpstart Day 23: Nuun All Day review + giveaway!

January Jumpstart day 23 started bright and early for me! Thursday is always an early day, whether at the gym or logging miles on the pavement. Today was a gym day. I did my first set of wall balls with squats. Those aren’t real fun, but I’ll keep trying it!

JJS 1-23

I received a complimentary product to review. All opinions are my own.

I love Nuun! I use their active hydration tabs weekly. My favorite flavors are fruit punch and tropical so far. There’s a few others I want to try.

So, I was pretty excited when I found out they have a new product, Nuun All Day. They were gracious enough to send me a 4 pack to try out AND we have a 4 pack to give away! The all day hydration only has 4 flavors right now so you get all 4: Grapefruit orange, Grape Raspberry, Tangerine Lime and Blueberry Pomegranate.

 photo IMG_2089_zps335b38b2.jpg

The Nuun All Day is an all natural electrolyte tab enhanced with vitamins and minerals, but has less sodium than the Active hydration so you can stay hydrated all day.

You drop 1 tab into 16 ounces of water and let it dissolve. You can break a tab in half as well for 8 ounces of water. I tried all 4, but my favorite is the blueberry pomegranate.

Nuun all day2

The All day product has under 8 calories and no sugar.

I like my drinks really cold so I usually make it the night before. Most days I drink water ok, but some days I struggle so this has helped already. I drank 6-7 glasses today and that’s a good day for me. Only 16 ounces was with the Nuun in it.

nuun all day

I hope they come out with some of the original flavors for the All Day version!

There are several ways to enter in the rafflecopter below. This giveaway runs from 8AM CST January 23, 2014 until 8PM CST January 29, 2014. The winner will be contacted January 30, 2014. You must be a US resident to receive the prize. No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited by law.

Let’s talk Hydration

With the heat and humidity here in Texas, hydration is always on my mind. Even more so with marathon training. I carry around a glass of water everywhere. It has a lid and straw. Some days I do really well and some days just ok.

Did you know your heart beats faster when you are dehydrated? I didn’t, until recently. I’ve heard that drinking slushies or icees before you run can lower your body temperature. I haven’t tried a Dr. Pepper Slurpee yet, but I have tried Power Ice and love it!

In the winter I can run without carrying water for anything 5 miles or less. But in the summer and anything over 5 miles I carry this Nathan hand held water bottle with just plain water in it. Only downside is by the time I get to 3.5-4 miles the water is very warm. I haven’t figured out how to avoid that.

For anything over 5 miles I wear my iFitness fuel belt with water bottles. Sometimes it’s just water, sometimes Nuun tablets or half Gatorade. I also wear this belt in 15k and half marathon races. The half in May I actually walked very quickly through the water stops and was able to refill the bottles and keep going. Just takes a little coordination! 😉

So, this last weekend I tried out my new Nathan Instensity back pack. I was really skeptical about wearing this while running. I was afraid it would bounce or just be too heavy. One of the girls I run with has a CamelBak and it rubs her shoulders when she wears a tank top. I definitely did not want that!

So, here is what I chose.

It worked out perfect for 11 miles last weekend. It holds 70 ounces, I filled it to 40 and only drank about 24 plus a Gatorade at our “water stop”. There was a little noise from the bladder, but nothing crazy. No shoulder rub. I didn’t feel like I was carrying weight on my back. My shoulders and arms were a little sore the next morning, so maybe there was a little weight “lifting” involved!

The pockets on the front held my mace on one side and chews on the other. Once it got light out I put my flash light in the top pocket in the back. It’s big enough for snacks on really, really long runs. I will train with it before deciding about racing with it.

My Saturday group has recently started putting a cooler out on our route. It’s a great idea, just takes some planning. But it’s nice to have that cold Gatorade or water mid run.

After runs I have been drinking Muscle Pfarm Amino 1 supplements in my water.  If it’s not enough or I start to get a headache I go with Gatorade, but overall I just make myself drink water all day, every day. I think that’s the most important. You can’t cram water the night before, it’s not enough.

Other options I’ve tried are Nuun tablets. I do like them, they don’t have a real strong flavor.  It is fizzy and I mix it the night before I need it.

What do you carry for hydration when you run?

What do you drink?

#30DayHomies Day 31!!

This is it! Did you stick with us the whole month? I hope you are seeing the results of your hard work.

So, now what? Well, hopefully you started something you are ready to continue! I love that I tried new stuff I tried this month!

  • Yoga
  • Pull up machine at the gym
  • Stair master
  • Spin class
  • Yogurt (baby steps!)

If you weighed and measured at the beginning of January you should weigh and measure in the next few days. Feel free to share your progress! I measured this morning and I think everything was the same. But that’s just a guess since I deleted an email account from my phone it deleted the notes attached to it. I will weigh in the morning.

Yesterday I didn’t make it to the gym, had to take little Molly to the vet and it was early release from school. I did however do some spring cleaning, vacuuming, dusting, laundry, dishes and scrubbing bath tubs is a work out, right? I got over 5,000 steps on my Fitbug.

We still have Swiftwick socks to give away, 6 more pair size small (shoe size 5-7.5). Click on the Rafflecopter link below to enter to win a pair! Ends Monday night at 11:59PM.

#30DayHomies Day 21 and New Giveaways!

It’s Monday! Who’s off today? I am! I took the day off to take Ally to her hearing test but now that’s getting cancelled since she’s sick.

So, we are just hanging out at home and Molly has her first appointment with the groomer today. That should be interesting.

Today’s workout will be Nike Training App (15 minute abs) and I will get a short 2 mile run in at some point.

Some fun giveaways this week from Columbia Muddy Buddy races and Nuun Optimal Hydration. Check out Sara’s post on She Cooks She Crafts She Runs for the Muddy Buddy Race entry giveaway. The entry is for any of their races, but please only enter if you can make the race. It’s open to US Residents only.

Nuun sent me 2 flavors to try as part of the challenge. I had heard of them before but never tried them. They make tabs to put in your water that have electrolytes in them and they taste really good!

NUUN ACTIVE HYDRATION is formulated specifically for higher intensity activities and/or higher electrolyte replenishment needs.

I always drank Gatorade after a hard run or workout, especially in the warmer months. I mean the fully sugared kind, not the G2. I tried but didn’t care for it. So I kept drinking those extra calories. Nuun is sugar free and there’s 3 whole calories in it if you use 1 tab! I usually mix it up the night before because I like my water good and cold! I got the Tri-berry and Fruit punch to try, I really don’t have a favorite there, they are both really good!  Since John has been “stealing” them I bought him Lemon Lime last week and he really likes it. The tabs fizz a little and dissolve really quick.

There are 12 tabs in each tube at about $6.00 per tube, makes it about $.50 each plus the cost of your water! That’s cheaper than the Gatorade I was buying and I don’t have the extra calories. They have a lot of flavors ~ the 3 we tried plus Citrus fruit, lemon tea, strawberry lemonade, just to name a few.

You can order it online direct from Nuun or I purchased some at Luke’s Locker last week.

However you might hold off on ordering until next weekend since one lucky reader will win a 4 pack of mixed flavors from Nuun! This promotion is open only to US Residents.

To enter to win the Nuun Hydration 4 pack click the Rafflecopter link below.

It’s FRIDAY! That’s definitely on my list of favorite things!

It’s also Day 18 of our challenge, it’s the last day to enter for this week’s giveaways. We will announce the winners tomorrow.

I thought I’d share a few of my favorite things with you. Some I’ve used for a while, some I just found!

My foot is feeling really good today, I’m still planning on 6 miles tomorrow. Gotta get in gear for Cowtown, it’s coming up February 24!
