Wednesday Wonderfulz #3, the running edition

This week’s Wednesday Wonderfulz has a theme: Running Gear. Fitnessmomwinecountry and I are sharing our favorites!

  Wednesday Wonderfulz final 2

These are a few of my favorites, but the only thing you really have to have are running shoes!

First off: shirts and shorts. I recommend sweat wicking. I got this Nike top at TJ Maxx for a great price. I prefer compression shorts over wind type shorts. The compression shorts keep my legs from rubbing together. Some brands even have zipper pockets in them. My favorite right now are the Under Armour ones, I get them from Sports Authority. I also have a pair from JC Penney in their Xersion brand.

shirt and shorts

Next up is shoes and socks. Everyone has their favorite shoe and you should get fitted for the shoe that’s right for you. I personally wear Asics and have been for about 1.5 years. My current favorite socks are the Feetures brand.

socks and shoes

Headbands. Some people wear hats, I mostly prefer a headband. Bondi Band is my favorite year round. In the winter it can cover my ears to help keep them warm. But in the summer when I don’t need that I like the thin head bands, there are several companies that make them.

headbands

Sports bras: My current favorite is one from Champion at Target. Next favorite is Handful, and actually I’ve been wearing that more as a “weekend” bra instead of for running. They are so comfortable. That’s something you really can’t skimp on either. :-)

There are a few other accessories I use. Since I run in the dark unless I’m racing I carry a Knuckle Light, I highly recommend it. I also use a Nathan hand held water bottle a lot these days and a SpiBelt to put my phone, ID and car key in. As long as I have it tight enough it doesn’t bounce. I wear it a lot and sometimes it gets loose.

So, those are my favorites these days. There are lots of extras like GPS watches, iPods, headphones, but none of those are really necessary in order to run.

What are your favorite running items?

One thing you can’t live without?

Gifts for the Fitness Fanatics

Wondering what to get the person in your life that loves to workout? Here’s a few ideas and things I love or would love to get.

Check out Sara’s list at She Cooks, She Crafts, She Runs.

fitnessgifts

GPS Watch: I’ve only owned one watch and it’s the Nike + Sport Watch. There are a ton of choices out there and they all do different things. The Nike watch will track laps and do intervals. You can set the intervals on the computer for any time that you want. It will give you calorie burn but it’s most accurate with the added heart rate monitor strap. I wear the foot pod and the miles are also more accurately tracked and it works indoors on the treadmill as well.

Love my Yurbuds head phones. They really do stay in and they guarantee their products. You can find them at Target and probably Best Buy or a running store.

yurbuds

Foam Roller: I love, love, love my foam roller! It’s not just for runners. This would be a great gift and the one I have from Target is $20-25.

Bondi Bands: These make great stocking stuffers too! They keep hair back, can cover ears when it’s cold, machine washable and stay in place!

bondi band

Compression socks: Pro Compression and Swift Wick are my favorite!

Compression socks

This skirt from Lulu Lemon is on my list!

Stocking Stuffers and small items:

  • Chews or Gu. Presonally I prefer the Honey Stingers chews.
  • Ponytail holders like these.
  • iTunes gift card
  • Hand weights
  • Socks. There are so many brands out there, try to find out which ones your loved one prefers.

It’s What I Ate (and did) Wednesday!

Welcome to another edition of What I ate Wednesday! Even though this one is mostly what I did Wednesday.

Today is my day off and it’s gym day. I am worn out! I warmed up on the elliptical (I got bored after about 8 minutes). Then abs, legs, arms, plank and a cool down on the stationary bike. I did up my weight on the leg press to 95 pounds! Yay for hitting goals!
I’ve been eating yogurt with the granola that you add in and I really like it. After the yummy granola at camp last week I decided to find me some! I found this brand at Kroger and really like it. I just bought the yogurt without the granola and add my own. This is a great snack by itself too.
photo-1a
Pre-gym breakfast was a toasted wheat bagel with peanut butter and banana. Post gym I grabbed an Isopure protein drink on the way to the Chiropractor/Sports Medicine doctor. My knee has been kinda wacky the last week or so, I’m assuming all the hill work and adding miles.
I was very hungry and ready for lunch at about 10:45, I had leftover tacos from last night. Doing my best to leave the chocolate chip cookies alone, but having a very hard time with that!
Dinner was Chick-fil-A. I get their grilled chicken sandwich with bacon and cheese and it’s a little lighter than the original fried. Obviously cooking at home is always a better option but when I choose fast food Chick-Fil-A seems to be a decent choice.
Let’s do a little comparison: Original chicken (fried) vs. the Grilled Club (taken from Chick-Fil-A website)
440 calories vs. 400
16 fat grams vs. 12
4g saturated fat vs. 5
60mg cholesterol vs. 85
1400mg sodium vs. 1110
42g carbs vs. 36
2g fiber vs. 3
6g sugar vs. 9
30g protein vs. 37

Where do you buy your running/workout clothes?

I never find anything at TJ Maxx but lucked out today. I needed a new every day jacket/windbreaker since I discovered  (at camp) the zipper was broken on my old jacket. So, I ended up with this super cute New Balance jacket and a Nike top. The jacket was $25 and the top was $15. The jacket is lined and is water and wind resistant. I guess I could run in it but it’s a little heavier than my Nike running jacket and it’s perfect for me!

Here are my awesome finds!

photo (5)

And here’s me modeling the jacket. No, I won’t be quitting my day job anytime soon!

photo (6)

I had a busy day ~ Target (twice), had to replace my smoothie maker that died on me yesterday. It’s not a good sign when the smoothie oozes out the vents in the back! Oil changed, Half Price books but didn’t find the book I needed.

Where do you buy your running or workout clothes? Any good finds recently? What fast food place do you find decent, (somewhat on the healthy side) food?

14 miles is….done!

Yep, 14 miles! I finally broke past 13.1. I’ve never tried to, wasn’t sure I could. It’s definitely a confidence booster to accomplish a longer distance.

It all started when I said out loud I was hoping to run my first full marathon this year, in December. I’m a part of a great running club and Moms Run This Town so I have lots of training partners! Our normal group is training for the Patriot Half Marathon which is on Memorial Day. It’s a crazy, hilly course that goes all over our town. Training run for today was 8 miles for everyone else, 14 for me and one other girl, hopefully my future marathon training partner!

14miles

I use this training plan for my half marathons, it’s a beginner plan. I never thought about changing it, didn’t think I needed to. It was brought up today that I should be running past 13.1 in training for a half now, that it might/should help with a PR. So, in a few weeks it’ll be 15, then I’ll taper down before the race. I’m doing research for a intermediate/advanced half training plan now.

I had to work today also, so my day started at 4:20AM to get these miles in…I’m having a hard time staying awake now.

I’ve been hungry all day today, just kinda snacking, and trying to be good about food choices. I’ve gotten lots of protein today. Need some carbs for dinner.

What half marathon training plans do you use? Do you run past 13.1 while training for a half?

Did you #EarnYourShower today? I did!

We have a winner and a not-so-great run

This morning was my first run since Sunday. I would have thought my legs would be plenty rested, but they had other plans. Let’s just say I’m glad it’s done. I should be good to go for Saturday! I have a 6 mile training run followed by a 5k race.

My daughter apparently inherited my need for shoes – that need has changed from every day shoes to running/workout shoes.  At the RnR expo last week, Luke’s Locker had these fabulous Nike Free’s on clearance, so guess who pooled their money together to buy said shoes? Yep, it’s nice that my 11 year old and I wear the same size. She wears them to school, I wear them to the gym. She will probably grow out of them soon!

What I Ate (and did) Wednesday!

It’s time for What I Ate Wednesday, originally started by Peas and Crayons!

 ”What WIAW isn’t about—-

Comparison – Judgement – Restriction – Guilt
—-What WIAW is about—-
Celebrating one of the glorious things we all have in common: We all eat!
WIAW is about food and fun! It’s about making new friends, breaking out of a food rut, noting changes in your diet/lifestyle, inspiring yourself & others, embracing fruit & vegetables, nourishing your body with the foods that work for you, finding new ways to eat your favorite foods, and so. much. more. <3
Celebrate Food.  Celebrate blogging.  Celebrate Individuality.”

So today was my first day back at the gym, actually first workout since Sunday. It seems like forever ago but it was only 2 days off. My legs were pretty sore and tired on Monday but I am ready to go now! I got 20 minutes on the elliptical, quite a bit of weights, sit ups, push-ups and planks and then finished with about 8 minutes on the stationary bike. Burned 500 calories in 1 hour.
My pre-gym snack was homemade granola bites and then post-gym a protein shake from Smoothie King. That kept me from buying too many snacks at the grocery store.
I decided to run an experiment with my Nike + Sport Watch and heart rate monitor today. After I left the gym, I reset it and headed over to the grocery store. I got my groceries bought, took them home, put them up, then cleaned and mopped by bathroom. I almost forgot I still had my heart rate monitor running ~ I burned another 240 calories doing all that (about 80 minutes).
Lunch was pizza, decided to try that on Naan bread again. Pineapple, canadian bacon and cheese makes a pretty good pizza!
And of course my usual day of errands and laundry, guess I should have left that heart rate monitor on all day! I got these muffins to try, so I’m baking, sort of.
Dinner was rotisserie chicken, home -made mashed potatoes, carrots and green beans. Yummy!
Tomorrow’s agenda includes 5 miles at 5AM. Right now the forecast says 49 degrees, I’ll take it!
Did you workout today? Eat anything yummy?

Dallas Rock N’ Roll Half Marathon!

It’s done! I was so looking forward to this race and now I couldn’t be happier it’s done. I knew a lot of people running it and really enjoy seeing everyone running and our running family out there cheering!

The weekend started with the expo on Saturday. Rock N’ Roll really knows how to put on a great expo! I’ve never seen one like this. It was great to see Brooks there, Ally and I both got on the treadmill and got our gait analysis done. Looks like she needs new shoes ASAP! My favorites also included Nuun and Yurbuds. I went with my friend Angie and she got all fixed up at the KT Tape booth. ‘

RnR3

Our group made shirts and got these great pink skirts from Lily Bomb!

RnR7

And the back!

RnR8

I did not, however, enjoy the wind. The main reason I was looking forward to this race is because I thought the weather would be perfect…it was not. Now, some runners may have thought today’s weather was perfect, and I tip my hat to you. The temperate wasn’t the issue, it was the 20-25 mph wind, which made the temp feel much colder.

RnR 1

Race day started at 4:40AM, I was carpooling with friends and meeting at 5:30AM. We got to Fair Park at 6AM and rode the bus to the start line. I haven’t done very many one-way races, it went really well. The buses were nice and warm! We got dropped off at Dallas City Hall and proceeded to wait along with everyone else in the cold wind. We took a bathroom break and took some pre-race picture. I also used bag drop for the first time and it was easy and I feel comfortable using it in the future.

RnR 2

RnR11

I was running with a good friend and training partner, we were in Corral 8. Our friends were spread out over just about all the corrals. We stopped at each one dropping off friends and taking pictures. We got to start about 8:10. We had originally discussed keeping our pace about 10 minutes per mile at first, then stepping it up later, hoping to finish about 2:10. That plan quickly became a sub-10 start and sub 9 finish! We hit a little over 1o a few times but didn’t stay there long.

RnR9 RNR13 RnR6

I was feeling really good for the most part, finally warmed up about mile 3, tied my jacket around my waist. We saw some friends cheering at mile 3, but I didn’t think to give them our jackets, oops! Never did take the gloves off, my fingers never stayed warm enough. Grabbed some Gatorade at mile 7 I think, then ate our chews. Everything is a blur, I did get a few pictures along the way early on.

RnR5 RnR 4

RnR14

At about mile 11-12 I wasn’t sure I was going to make it, we had kept our pace in the low 9′s, hitting a few sub-9′s at times. I knew we were set to PR and didn’t want to quit but it was hard. I can’t even imagine how much harder it will be to get under 2 hours. It’s on my long term goal list. I say long term because once I get sub-2 I want to be able to stay there. That means ramping up my speed on all my runs, different training and I’m not quite ready for that. I have a lot to accomplish this year and I’m not sure I want to push that yet. We will see what life brings. Right now I’m ecstatic with 2:03:07. I’m beyond happy!

RnR12

5k time: 31:06

10k time: 1:01:05

10 mile time: 1:36:17

Official pace: 9:24 per mile

Chip time: 2:03:07

RnR10

I had a great run, had great company and yummy food today! I will rest until Wednesday, go to the gym, then back to 5@5 on Thursday. My next half marathon is almost 2 months away. The Patriot is here in my hometown and it’s the 2nd year for it. It’s on Memorial Day!

Great run and Empower Fitness review!

One of those great runs!

It’s not often but once in a while a run happens to be great! Everything is in line – pace and breathing, I feel like I could just keep running! I had one of those runs this morning, it was “only” 4.28 miles but at a sub-10 pace and it was great!

 Meal prepping

I’m not a regular at prepping meals, it just happens sometimes. Sunday afternoon was one of those days. My husband grilled chicken and pineapple and I made rice and veggies for us to eat for a few days. We’ll see what we come up with for next week!

Empower Fitness

Has anyone ever used a Kettle Bell? I hadn’t until a few weeks ago when I got one from Empower Fitness. I always look at it sitting there in the gym, thinking what could I do with it? I’ve used a medicine ball with my Russian twists but not the kettle bell.

I got the adjustable one, so you can change the weight around and have anywhere from 5, 8, or 12 pounds. I’ve also used just the 4 pound add on with my sit-ups. It’s so easy to change the weight, once you figure out the “trick” to it. Each weight locks into the other.

My husband had it out of the box pretty quick, luckily I had already taken pictures of it!

*I was not financially compensated for this post. I received a sample for review purposes. The opinions are completely my own based on my experience.*

We also finally convinced our 11 year old daughter that lifting light weights will help her softball swing, so guess who’s also been using it. I take all the weights off and she uses the Kettlebell by itself which is 5 pounds.

The whole family is enjoying this new addition to our workout routines.  Watch for an announcement soon, you will have a chance to win something from Empower!

St. Patrick’s Day!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! I had a really nice weekend. Started out with a 9 mile training run around White Rock Lake, first time and it was so nice. We started when it was still dark, so toward the end the sun started coming up and the views were really great and it was calming. Except for my beating heart!

My running buddies are a great group of ladies, we were a few short this weekend but had a great time!

Wonderful lake views!

A little stretching and refueling.

photo-1 And of course breakfast afterwards. We tried out Torchy’s Tacos and it was really good! Nothing better than breakfast tacos after a run!

They have this sign in the restaurant so of course I had to get a picture.

photo-2

Following my morning run was family day. We played miniature golf and hit some balls in the batting cages. Well, some of us hit some balls. Some of us didn’t. It’s a good thing I can run!

photo-6

Ended the day with fajita’s and green beer. The weather was gorgeous, perfect ending to Spring Break.

I had intended to hit the gym or go for a short run today but the carpets needed cleaning instead. When I say needed, I mean it. We came home from a lovely day to a not-so-lovely mess left to us by our 13 year old lab. Who knew steam cleaning carpets would be my workout of the day?

Have a great week! Did you workout today? Anyone race today?

What I Ate (and did) Wednesday

It’s Wednesday and I’m normally off but I switched my days around to be off Thursday and Friday. Woohoo long weekend!

I worked out at home this morning, did my 20 minute home circuit and burned 200 calories! I’ll probably hit the gym tonight, I need to lift heavier weights than what I have at home.

photo-2   photo-3

Breakfast was a protein shake, I missed my morning snack since things are crazy here. Lunch was those yummy leftovers from dinner last night. I have chicken in the crock pot for chicken tacos tonight.

I got my confirmation from Rock N Roll, with my bib number and corral! It’s 11 days away! I’m excited.
