Let the Madness Continue!

“TGIF! Right!  Well, in the spirit of March Madness I have brought another basketball inspired post.  I loved Shelly’s idea of incorporating upper body strength into her basketball workout so I’ve followed her lead.  The Ball Bench Press uses a ball in place of a weight bench, no ball, just bench!
I’m sorry that my head is cut off in these pictures.  PicMonkey wouldn’t let me enlarge the width anymore but you get the jest of the exercise.  The ball is providing added resistance for you to work against therefore you are having to work harder and engaging your abs.

The step ups are shown in the bigger photos below.  You can either just keep your legs straight or pull out the Bosu and increase the difficulty by just barely hovering over the floor.  I tried doing the presses on the Bosu with just one foot at a time and was not able to do even one good press so I didn’t include pictures but if you are wanting to try it, DO IT!

Great run and Empower Fitness review!

One of those great runs!

It’s not often but once in a while a run happens to be great! Everything is in line – pace and breathing, I feel like I could just keep running! I had one of those runs this morning, it was “only” 4.28 miles but at a sub-10 pace and it was great!

 Meal prepping

I’m not a regular at prepping meals, it just happens sometimes. Sunday afternoon was one of those days. My husband grilled chicken and pineapple and I made rice and veggies for us to eat for a few days. We’ll see what we come up with for next week!

Empower Fitness

Has anyone ever used a Kettle Bell? I hadn’t until a few weeks ago when I got one from Empower Fitness. I always look at it sitting there in the gym, thinking what could I do with it? I’ve used a medicine ball with my Russian twists but not the kettle bell.

I got the adjustable one, so you can change the weight around and have anywhere from 5, 8, or 12 pounds. I’ve also used just the 4 pound add on with my sit-ups. It’s so easy to change the weight, once you figure out the “trick” to it. Each weight locks into the other.

My husband had it out of the box pretty quick, luckily I had already taken pictures of it!

We also finally convinced our 11 year old daughter that lifting light weights will help her softball swing, so guess who’s also been using it. I take all the weights off and she uses the Kettlebell by itself which is 5 pounds.

March Madness going STRONG!

I hope you are trying out these exercises each week. We are working hard this year on getting strong and staying motivated. If you don’t have a workout partner or someone to hold you accountable, find one or ask me! I have lots of ladies in my life that hold me accountable. If I don’t show up you better believe they are gonna want to know why!

I’ve been doing the lateral jumps and jump squats this week. That gets my heart rate up and my legs are feeling it. I’m working on getting strong this year. I have a lot of goals and a lot to look forward to.

Goals for 2013, these are a work in progress!

  • Running: that’s an easy one for me. I’m getting about 18-25 miles a week, just depends on the long run that’s scheduled.
  • Weight training: Going pretty good. Some days I use light weights at home, when I go to the gym I lift heavier weights.
  • Core: I’m doing push-up, planks, sit-ups, anything and everything I can to strengthen my core.
  • Blog goals: I’m trying to stay consistent in writing posts. I’m always interested in what my readers want to see, so shoot me an email if there’s a topic you want discussed or if you have a question. I’m also trying to stay caught up reading the blogs I follow and comment on those too!
  • Organizing my house. Let’s get back to this one another day. (not doing well)
  • Eating better. Some days good, some days not. Overall I’m doing good.

March Madness, new exercise for the week!

We have a new exercise this week, coming from Shelly and Running Pfuhl. We all know getting healthy and fit isn’t about luck, you have to work for it. It takes dedication and hard work. Tell us what you are doing!

Training update: Rock N’ Roll Half Marathon

My last “long run” for RnR is tomorrow, it’s 9 miles and we are going to the lake for change of scenery. It’s my first Rock N’ Roll race and everyone says they are fun but crowded. Cowtown was really crowded so I’m prepared. I’m hoping to shave a few minutes off my time from Cowtown. If the weather cooperates that should be doable.

March Madness and a giveaway!

It’s Friday!! I’m always excited for Friday. We have a new exercise to introduce today. Did anyone try the lateral jumps? They are great for getting your heart rate up, just add them as intervals to any workout you are already doing, even weight lifting.

This week’s March Madness exercise is Squat Jumps! I know you’re excited, but it’s time to work on those glutes! You can also modify this to squats without the jump to suit your ability.

I suggest starting in sets of 10 reps, take a break and go again! Here is a video demonstration of Squat Jumps. You can do several things with your hands, clasp them in front of you, put them behind your head and move them with your jumps. I’ve included a few pictures as well. This will get your heart rate up and work your legs, glutes and core.

This week brought many surprises to my door! I’ll share them with you and tell you to play close attention for giveaways to be announced! We want to keep you motivated!

photo-2 This top is pinkish/purple, my pictures don’t do it justice. It’s long, VERY soft, has wonderful thumb holes in it. It’s thin, so not too warm for wearing after the gym. It was cold the morning I wore this so I had to throw a jacket on over it.

I’ve got it on again today, lounging around the house. It has a larger neckline and could be off the shoulder if you buy it bigger, cute with a tank top under it! It’s machine washable and dryer safe, although I hang dry everything around here so I haven’t tested it in the dryer.

It’s a comfy top and I think it will be my go-to top for the gym and Saturday’s for sure! I’m wearing a size small, as you can see it’s not real loose on me.

What actually drew me to Albion are the swim suits! I haven’t purchased one yet, I’m still shopping, be sure to check out all their clothing! If you want to follow them on Pinterest, you can find them here!

Today’s workout was sorta thrown together at the last minute. But, I proved you do not need a gym membership to get your heart rate up. If you haven’t tried this week’s exercise, lateral jumps, I highly recommend them!

March Madness!

Happy Friday! I don’t know about you, but this has been a long week. I’m ready to rest. (ha, ha)

It really is March madness around here. Just running a few races this month!

  • 5k March 2, with Ally
  • 4k Tap N’ Run, March 9
  • Rock N Roll Half, March 24
  • 5k March 30, with Ally

The 5k tomorrow at Ally’s school is their 2nd annual, last year this race was her very first 5k. I’m so proud of her!

Yesterday after running 4.7 miles in 34 degrees and a light wind of about 8mph, we had a little plank party!
