January Jumpstart Day 31: Month in review

This is it! Did you hit your goals for the month. I think I did pretty good. I got my nutrition back on track, clothes are fitting a little better. I was able to add an extra day in the gym.

Today is normally my rest day, but I have a gym date with my hubby tonight. YAY! I will take it easy on my legs since I have 20 miles tomorrow!

January Jumpstart Day 29: Safety tips for runners + Road ID giveaway

It’s day 29…I really should stop this count down, it made January go by so fast!  My workout today hasn’t happened yet. It’s early release from school, so once Ally gets home we will head to the gym. Maybe sneak in a short run if it’s not terribly cold.

Let’s talk safety, I know we’ve done that before.  But, it’s such an important lesson and we need a reminder sometimes. These tips apply to runners and walkers.

SafetyTips!

  • If you can, run with a buddy.
  • Run against traffic. Never with cars at your back, especially important if you run in the street. Whether it’s daylight or not.
  • Wear bright clothes. Running in the dark in black/gray clothes will not help a car see you.
  • There are tons of blinkers, flash lights, bright clothes out there….find some!
  • Dog spray/mace. I actually carry mace (Personal Savers) as much for stray dogs as unwelcome attention from strangers. I’ve only had a few incidents where I was uncomfortable and of course one of those times I had no phone and no pepper spray! (rookie mistake)
  • Change your routes. When I started out I always ran the same route, I figured it’d be easy for the hubby to find me if I didn’t come back home. Unfortunately, other people start to notice that routine as well. I’m not a fan of posting your routes on Facebook or Twitter either. That’s asking for trouble.
  • Don’t wear your jewelry. You don’t want to give someone a reason to rob you.
  • If you are on a trail/sidewalk, stay to the right. This will keep you safe from getting run over by a biker! Or a runner trying to pass you.
  • Music: I don’t usually wear my headphones except on long runs or races and I only wear one ear bud. It’s best not to wear both ear buds with music up. You need to be able to hear what’s around you. ie dogs, people chasing you, cars.
  • Just pay attention to your surroundings. Always assume the driver doesn’t see you and be prepared to get out of the way!
  • Carry ID or get a Road ID. My whole family has a Road ID wristband.  Ally wore hers to camp, to visit family out of state, pretty much she wears it all the time now. I didn’t even have to prompt her to do that. (I got a smart girl!)

You can put anything you want on your Road ID. I have my name, my husbands name and phone number, my date of birth, and “no allergies” on mine. My husband’s medicine is listed on his. This is especially important if you have a life threatening situation and can’t tell someone if you are on medicine or have allergies. He wears his to the gym. I don’t normally but I should be. I wear it when running and for races.

Giveaways!!

To go along with the topic of safety, our giveaway today is from Road ID. They have tons of options and colors. You can put your Road ID on your wrist, ankle or shoe, with options for the type of bracelet. John and I have the sport band with velcro. Ally got the slim wrist band. The ID plates can be removed and used on different bands from the same line. She will need a bigger band at some point. Some bands even have reflective material.

They have several high visibility products I didn’t know they offered, like reflective shoe laces, wrist bands and belts.

January Jumpstart Day 28: Currently + a few giveaways

Welcome to Day 28 of January Jumpstart! We have almost made it. I hope you have set goals this month, started a new routine, maybe tried a new workout and found some accountability here. For me, today was a gym day. I did 2 miles on the treadmill, followed by leg weights and abs. I haven’t been doing much leg weights lately so I need to work those back in.

Breakfast was a wheat bagel with almond butter and banana.

Let’s do another installment of currently….

Currently:

I’m reading The Long Run by Matt Long. A friend loaned it to me a while ago and it’s taking me forever to read it. It’s a good book though!

I’m wearing Maurice’s Denim Flex Jeggings. They are so comfortable!

My new-to-me favorite show is Chicago Fire. I gotta find the 1st season on DVD. I got caught up on the 2nd season on Hulu and I’m hooked. My old faves are still Grey’s Anatomy, CSI, and Law & Order: SVU.

I’m drinking water…pretty much that’s it. No sodas, no alcohol, so sweet tea.

My bedtime is 9:30 PM 4 nights a week because my alarm is set for 4:30 AM.

Favorite lotion is Velvet Sugar from Bath and Body Works.

Giveaways!!

I’m excited about today’s giveaways!

The first one is from Allied Medal Display.

Allied makes custom hangers and have tons to choose from in stock. They are made of stainless steel and it comes with the hardware to hang it.  The giveaway is for a medal hanger of your choice, up to $75 value, excluding custom orders.

January Jumpstart Day 27: Goals Check + Giveaway

monday cartoon photo: Cartoon Maxine Monday Mondays Coffee LOL Funny Laughs Laughing MaxineMondays.jpg

Anyone else feel like that? This month has flown by! I wish time would slow down a little. It may have something to do with the fact that I’m counting down to my marathon, that is probably making time go faster.

Monday brings goals check time. How’d you do this week?

Goalscheck 2

I did ok this week. Not great but good.

  • Eating out: I caved and ate fast food for lunch on Friday. It was a moment of weakness.
  • Water: really good! Maybe the best week ever!
  • Weight: I was up slightly on Friday morning, but I’ll just give it my best this week.
  • Food: I did track it, even on the bad days.
  • Workouts: Ran fewer miles, but got some good workouts it. Tried wall balls with squats for the first time.

Overall I’m pleased with my progress. I’m definitely headed in the right direction. I just have to keep making good choices and change those bad habits.

January Jumpstart Day 24: Workout + giveaway

TGIF! This has been a long week. I’m normally off on Wednesday, but I was off Monday so it makes the week drag on and on…..Plus it messes with my workout schedule.

Friday is my rest day. I didn’t log a lot of miles this week but I got some good workouts in at the gym.

Sara at She Cooks, She Crafts, She Runs has been busy writing us another exercise routine including the demo videos here and here. I have a hard time getting motivated to work out at home. Short workouts like this are easy for me to fit in.

January Jumpstart Day 23: Nuun All Day review + giveaway!

January Jumpstart day 23 started bright and early for me! Thursday is always an early day, whether at the gym or logging miles on the pavement. Today was a gym day. I did my first set of wall balls with squats. Those aren’t real fun, but I’ll keep trying it!

JJS 1-23

I received a complimentary product to review. All opinions are my own.

I love Nuun! I use their active hydration tabs weekly. My favorite flavors are fruit punch and tropical so far. There’s a few others I want to try.

So, I was pretty excited when I found out they have a new product, Nuun All Day. They were gracious enough to send me a 4 pack to try out AND we have a 4 pack to give away! The all day hydration only has 4 flavors right now so you get all 4: Grapefruit orange, Grape Raspberry, Tangerine Lime and Blueberry Pomegranate.

 photo IMG_2089_zps335b38b2.jpg

The Nuun All Day is an all natural electrolyte tab enhanced with vitamins and minerals, but has less sodium than the Active hydration so you can stay hydrated all day.

You drop 1 tab into 16 ounces of water and let it dissolve. You can break a tab in half as well for 8 ounces of water. I tried all 4, but my favorite is the blueberry pomegranate.

Nuun all day2

The All day product has under 8 calories and no sugar.

I like my drinks really cold so I usually make it the night before. Most days I drink water ok, but some days I struggle so this has helped already. I drank 6-7 glasses today and that’s a good day for me. Only 16 ounces was with the Nuun in it.

nuun all day

I hope they come out with some of the original flavors for the All Day version!

There are several ways to enter in the rafflecopter below. This giveaway runs from 8AM CST January 23, 2014 until 8PM CST January 29, 2014. The winner will be contacted January 30, 2014. You must be a US resident to receive the prize. No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited by law.

January Jumpstart Day 22: Race calendar + giveaway

Day 22 of January Jumpstart!!

I made my list of races for the year. These are the ones I’m either already signed up for or plan on signing up. I am running a few less races this year than last year. I really want to focus on a few goals.

  • Sub 1:50 half
  • 2nd Full marathon for the year

RACES 2014

I’m already signed up for all of the February races. The Cowtown races will earn me the challenge medal again with the 5k and full. Cowtown has great races and I’m excited to be a part of it again. (Discount code CT14HMWR)

The Renegade Run in March is a run my running club puts together. You pick the distance up to 26.2 and run whatever you want. It’s a point to point run. This will be my first year to participate, I need to decide on the distance.

April will be my first time to run a Zooma race. It’s near Austin, TX in the hill country. It’s a good thing there are hills here for me to train. It’s going to be a challenge and a fun weekend! (Discount code for this one is TXAMB9)

I haven’t signed up for the Too Hot to Handle race yet. I ran it last year and it rained and was cool/cold that day in July. It was definitely not too hot!

And October will ideally be my PR for the year. That’s formerly the Allstate race, the course is flat and it holds my PR as of right now.

My plan is to sign up for Dallas again. I have to conquer that race! I’m really hoping there will be a great incentive for the 2013 racers to sign up since we didn’t get to race.

I like races, it keeps me motivated. I like a mix of fun races and races that really push me. I know I won’t be placing in the longer distance races, so it’s a race against myself.

And to keep things exciting we have a 1 day giveaway from Swiftwick!

January Jumpstart Day 20: Goals Check, giveaway and a contest!

I have a big favor to ask everyone! Zooma has started an inspiring blogger contest. Whoever wins gets a trip for 2 to the Napa Valley race AND gets to give away a trip on their blog to a reader. I’d love your vote, you can find the info here.

ZOOMA Ambassador Badge 2014

It’s Monday again! (yep every week) It’s also day 20 and goals check time.

Goalscheck 2

January Jumpstart is about fitness, it’s about goals, about trying new things (scary I know), it’s about getting back on track or starting from scratch. Wherever you are in your journey I’m glad you are following along. It’s time to update you on my goals.

  • Food: tracking every single day. Did not have fast food for lunch last week. Yesterday wasn’t a great food day. I think Saturday’s 18 miles was catching up and I was hungry and fighting a headache all day long.
  • Water: doing good, but Saturday was not near enough. (probably what triggered the headache)
  • Workouts: good, marathon training is trucking along and I am headed to the gym this morning.
  • Close to about 2.5 pounds off since January 1.

The weather here has been great on the weekend. John was able to grill dinner Saturday night for a change. Ally has started pitching practice as well. Softball will start up soon. I’m glad she decided to play again.
