Throw-back Thursday post

Today let’s take a look back at last May. I kept meaning to re-post this one last week after the Self Magazine incident. If you didn’t catch it the first time around, hope you enjoy it and take something away.

No room for mean girls here

And a little throw back photo for you. This is Ally with Molly the first day we brought her home. It makes me smile.

Gone for a Run review and giveaway

I received a complimentary product to review. All opinions are my own. This post contains affiliate links.

Gone for a Run giveaway

Gone for a Run offers lots of great gifts for runners. They contacted me about reviewing one of their products and I gladly accepted. I chose the custom medal hanger since I was just about to complete my first full marathon. I scanned a copy of the race bib after I completed it and within about a week I had my medal hanger in my hands!

2014-03-07 21.20.12

They scanned the exact copy of my race bib and it’s mounted on a wooden plaque with the hook attached. I absolutely love it. It’s a great way to remember my first full marathon. The shipping was fast and the product was delivered as promised.

I had the perfect place for it, right beside my other medals.

Weekly recap: Spring break, training and I fell (again)

This week was a rough one, but so much fun as well!

Started the week out with Monday and Tuesday off, add that to the weekend and I had a nice 4 days off. The weather here was beyond gorgeous and it made me even more ready for Spring! Ally and I baked, hung out with friends, got pedicures, shopped, visited John’s uncles farm and “helped” to feed the calfs, went to the park and got frozen yogurt. She even joined me for a 4:45AM track workout!

Here are a few pictures from our week.

She's about to fall asleep in that chair.

She’s about to fall asleep in that chair.

Let’s talk training. It was a good training week. I’m enjoying track and looking forward to seeing progress.

Weekly training recap2

Training this week:

Sunday: Spin class

Monday: Legs plus 30 minutes of swimming

Tuesday: Track workout, 2 mile warm-up,  6×400’s faster pace, with 400’s recovery pace in between

Wednesday: Track workout, mostly core and conditioning. Lots of running up the stairs and down the hill, along with wheel barrows and leap frogs.

Thursday: What was supposed to be 5 miles, became 3 miles…see below

Friday: Rest day

Saturday: 7 miles, 9:44 pace

So, Thursday….

First I’m a huge proponent of running with someone or a group of people. If you’ve been reading my blog long you know that. I run Tuesday and Thursday 5@5 with the same group of ladies week in, week out. Thursday started out like any normal run. We all run the same route, start out together and then all fall into sub-groups based on our pace. I was running with one other girl that day and at mile 3 my head hit the pavement. Yep. My head. I tripped on a broken up piece of the street and went down hard. The side of my head (cheek and I think chin) hit and then it bounced. Heads don’t bounce well on concrete. I laid there thinking and told my friend Lisa that I saw sparks. It was the only way I knew to describe it.

I told her I hit my head. I don’t think I was knocked unconscious because I remember that and I remember another group of ladies coming up right after that happened then the rest of our group within another minute. I don’t remember at what point Lisa got me up, but I was quickly sat down on the curb. My husband was called. He came and got me and the girls piled in the back of his truck. It was a little too late for them to finish their run.

They all decided and I agreed that I needed to be checked out. The ER doc ruled out a concussion but did x-rays to check for facial fractures. Thankfully nothing showed up. I was given a prescription for pain pills with strict instructions to return if I have a real bad headache or nausea and vomiting.  They did insist on giving me a tetanus shot and my arm is still sore from that one.

I did not sleep very well Thursday night. That fall scared me pretty good and when I closed my eyes I just kept reliving the fall and my head hitting that concrete. I am so incredibly blessed to have the best friends to run with. Lisa was so calm and called John and told him I was ok, but needed to be picked up. We also realized we needed to make sure we each had some of our husbands phone numbers in our phones. I had mine with me but we don’t all carry them every time.

So, there’s my “don’t run alone” speech for the week. If I had been alone, there’s no telling how long it would have taken me to get out of the street and to be able to call home.

I did really good today. I was afraid I would be a little skiddish, but I took it easy and got it done. It’s supposed to pour down rain here today so I’m thinking of locking myself in the house and doing some spring cleaning.

Don’t forget about the Apera Bags giveaway, it ends next Thursday.

Apera bags review and giveaway!

This post contains affiliate links. I received a complimentary product for review. All opinions are my own.

I was so excited to get this bag in the mail. I love my current gym bag, but it’s a black hole. I can never find anything in there when I need it. My Apera bag has lots of fun pockets and storage. I don’t have a lot of storage at home to store my running and gym paraphernalia so it gets kept in my bag, things like my flashlight for running, iPod, lifting gloves, headphones, goggles, etc. It goes with me to the gym and in the car when I meet friends for a run.

2014-03-11 21.49.13

It came the day before I was heading out of town for the Cowtown race. I packed just what I needed at the finish line and during the day Saturday. It has side pockets for shoes, yes, even holds running shoes. It has storage in the back for sweaty clothes as well as a separate wet clothes bag.

2014-03-09 14.18.39

It has storage on top for phones and other small electronics and a padded pocket in the front that held my iPad. I think my Chromebook will go in there without the case on it. The main compartment unzips to lay out flat so it’s easy to find stuff.

2014-02-23 16.07.11

It’s also a light color inside making it easier to find what I need.

2014-02-21 15.17.31

I stuffed my bag today with shoes, clothes to change into after work, my watch, gym towel and there was still room for the water bottle to fit in the side pocket.

Apera bags

Apera gives away a bag each month from their website.  To enter the giveaway on Apera’s website, you just have to submit your email for their newsletter and they draw a random winner from those subscribers. The bag for March is the Sling Tote. They also donate a Sprint Pack to Special Olympics for each 3 bags they sell. Currently Duffel Packs and Blue Bags are on sale for 40% off.

Apera Sprint Pack

Enter in the Rafflecopter below for a chance to win a Sprint Pack from Apera along with a 25% coupon off the bag of your choice from their collection. This is not your ordinary light weight bag. It has an outside zipper pocket and a divider inside the bag. It’s drawstring with adjustable straps and a hook at the top to hang in a locker. This bag is the perfect one to grab for a quick trip to the gym, park, the fair or a school field trip. The giveaway is open to US residents only. Void where prohibited by law. No purchase necessary.

Cowtown, abs + giveaway

Today is the official start of Cowtown race weekend for me! Ally and I each have a 5k in the morning, but mine will not be run for time. This week has been busy which is good, it has kept my mind off the fact that I can’t run.

Cowtown logo

I’ve been busy making a list and pulling some stuff together to get packed. I’m really, really OCD and will probably be over packed, but I want to have something extra in case the weather changes. Still undecided about shorts vs. capris. The weather at the start for Saturday shows 54 degrees and Sunday shows 43. Those are perfect temps. I’m planning to wear my new Race Ragz shirt on Saturday, can’t wait to give it a test run.

The Cowtown always has a great expo. Can’t wait to get there!

Abs, abs and more abs. Today is the Up & Down Plank.  Are you getting it done?

Donate to win {guest post}

Today I have a guest post from Sara at She Cooks, She Crafts, She Runs. She is raising money and racing with Team in Training this year. Please check out her post!

Ok, first I must say, I’m sorry to those that haven’t been able to view my blog.  I renewed my domain name and for some reason everything went haywire.  I’m hoping with the internet’s refresh of servers that it’ll just iron itself out.

If you haven’t noticed my upper right hand corner of my blog is a link to my fundraising page for my Team in Training LLS.  I have committed myself to raise $2900 by May AND train to run the San Diego Rock n Roll Half Marathon in June.  I need YOUR help to raise this money to help find a cure for these heartbreaking blood cancers.  I know each and every one of us either knows someone, loves someone, or gone through the experience yourself of dealing with cancer.

I lost an old college buddy in December to leukemia and my husband and I shed quite a few tears thinking of this young man being taken so early.  So I’ve decided to jump in the fight with both feet hitting the pavement (physically by running) and financially (raising $ to help).

By donating at least $5, simply make a note on your donation that you are donating from the blog giveaway, and you are automatically entered to win the $25 iTunes gift card.  This giveaway will be open for 2 weeks so it’ll close on Wednesday, March 5, 2014.

Snow, abs and a giveaway

*this post contains affiliate links*

We got snow here yesterday. Actual snow, big flakes. We usually only get ice. Of course, it’s ice now. Crazy Texans don’t know how to drive in snow or ice and there were so many accidents yesterday. Our schools are closed for today and that equals lots of happy kids! We may get more today.

Here’s the view from my office yesterday.

  Snow day

What better way to start the weekend than abs and a giveaway? We are on day 7 of the calendar. Today’s exercise is the Russian Twist. I like doing this one with a medicine ball or holding a weight in my hand.

Active Accessories has given us a few more giveaways for February!

January Jumpstart Day 29: Safety tips for runners + Road ID giveaway

It’s day 29…I really should stop this count down, it made January go by so fast!  My workout today hasn’t happened yet. It’s early release from school, so once Ally gets home we will head to the gym. Maybe sneak in a short run if it’s not terribly cold.

Let’s talk safety, I know we’ve done that before.  But, it’s such an important lesson and we need a reminder sometimes. These tips apply to runners and walkers.

  • If you can, run with a buddy.
  • Run against traffic. Never with cars at your back, especially important if you run in the street. Whether it’s daylight or not.
  • Wear bright clothes. Running in the dark in black/gray clothes will not help a car see you.
  • There are tons of blinkers, flash lights, bright clothes out there….find some!
  • Dog spray/mace. I actually carry mace (Personal Savers) as much for stray dogs as unwelcome attention from strangers. I’ve only had a few incidents where I was uncomfortable and of course one of those times I had no phone and no pepper spray! (rookie mistake)
  • Change your routes. When I started out I always ran the same route, I figured it’d be easy for the hubby to find me if I didn’t come back home. Unfortunately, other people start to notice that routine as well. I’m not a fan of posting your routes on Facebook or Twitter either. That’s asking for trouble.
  • Don’t wear your jewelry. You don’t want to give someone a reason to rob you.
  • If you are on a trail/sidewalk, stay to the right. This will keep you safe from getting run over by a biker! Or a runner trying to pass you.
  • Music: I don’t usually wear my headphones except on long runs or races and I only wear one ear bud. It’s best not to wear both ear buds with music up. You need to be able to hear what’s around you. ie dogs, people chasing you, cars.
  • Just pay attention to your surroundings. Always assume the driver doesn’t see you and be prepared to get out of the way!
  • Carry ID or get a Road ID. My whole family has a Road ID wristband.  Ally wore hers to camp, to visit family out of state, pretty much she wears it all the time now. I didn’t even have to prompt her to do that. (I got a smart girl!)

You can put anything you want on your Road ID. I have my name, my husbands name and phone number, my date of birth, and “no allergies” on mine. My husband’s medicine is listed on his. This is especially important if you have a life threatening situation and can’t tell someone if you are on medicine or have allergies. He wears his to the gym. I don’t normally but I should be. I wear it when running and for races.

To go along with the topic of safety, our giveaway today is from Road ID. They have tons of options and colors. You can put your Road ID on your wrist, ankle or shoe, with options for the type of bracelet. John and I have the sport band with velcro. Ally got the slim wrist band. The ID plates can be removed and used on different bands from the same line. She will need a bigger band at some point. Some bands even have reflective material.

They have several high visibility products I didn’t know they offered, like reflective shoe laces, wrist bands and belts.

There are several ways to earn entries in the rafflecopter below. The giveaway is for a $35 e-card good toward the purchase of Road ID wristbands.
