Beautiful morning for a PR

It’s been a great training week. Food and water intake is back on track, now just have to keep it up!

Weekly training recap2

Training this week:

Sunday: Spin class

Monday: Track workout, core and conditioning

Tuesday: Track, 100×10, 300×10 recovery pace, 2 mile warm-up

Wednesday: Spin and abs

Thursday: 4.6 miles

Friday: Rest day

Saturday: 5k race

One of my goals for this year was to run a sub 24 minute 5k. I set that goal thinking it would take me until at least Summer or Fall to achieve it. Well, I crushed it this morning so now I have to set a new goal. Apparently all this hard work is paying off and I’m beside myself with excitement!

Green Door 5k, benefiting Children’s Relief International

It was a chilly morning, but I knew I’d warm up fast. It was a hilly course, but one I’m very familiar with so I knew what to expect. I am still a little shocked at my progress, not sure it has sunk in yet. I ended up placing 1st in my age group, 3rd overall and 2nd female to cross. Ally didn’t set a PR this morning but she ran a good race and came in first in her age group as well.

I saw so many PR’s achieved this morning, it was great to be there to cheer my friends on as they hit their goals in the 5k and 10k.

Green door race

I have the Zooma half coming up in 2 weeks. Not sure that I have any time goals for that yet. A friend is going with me, I’m looking forward to running it and hanging out.

Did you race this weekend? Run a training run?

Did you workout?

Cowtown race weekend, part 1 {2014}

I don’t even know where to start. The last few days have been a roller coaster. Who am I kidding, the last few months have been. This has been a 7.5 month journey, thanks to “Icemageddon” 2013 and the Dallas marathon being cancelled.

We headed to Ft. Worth Friday night, it just makes the weekend easier to not make that drive in Saturday morning. We ate at one of our very favorite mexican food restaurants, Joe T. Garcia’s. We can’t go to Ft. Worth without eating here.

Saturday morning started with me and Ally running 5k races. I was there to cheer on several friends running a 10k, some running their first ever 10k race! My 5k was just a warm-up for Sunday. My original training plan called for 2 miles that morning, so I took it a little easy (that’s hard to do).  Ally started out really good, then side cramps got her. I plan on working with her on breathing, fluid intake and pre-race nutrition over the next few months. She thought it would be a good idea to eat some yogurt at the expo before her race….YUCK! I can’t even imagine. So proud of her for sticking with it though.

After those races were done, we found a late breakfast and then went to the hotel to shower and change. I met up with a few more friends to head back to the expo. Cowtown has a good expo, lots of vendors and you can get a free health screening from the UNT Health Center. I wish I had made time to get my BMI checked out.

We shopped and listened to an overview of the half and full course. I got a new running jacket to replace one I had to send back. The zipper wouldn’t zip. Got John a 0.0 magnet for his truck, he’s pretty excited, and Ally got a new pair of Nike’s. Luke’s had their shoes on clearance plus 20% off everything in the booth.

I got in a very short nap before heading to dinner. I picked a restaurant that unfortunately was decent, at best. The entertainment made it all worth it. Apparently it was karaoke night there and a few of the husbands got serenaded during dinner. It was pretty funny!

Cowtown dinner

We didn’t stay out too late, most everyone was getting up to run the next morning. We had a few friends there for course support Sunday and I have a feeling they stayed out a little late that night. I was in bed at 8:45 as I was fighting a major headache and still had to pack up and be ready to check out Sunday before the race.

Our first day at Cowtown was busy, but we had fun!

April Arms

It’s April 1 and April Fools Day! Don’t worry, no practical jokes here. Are you ready for a new month of goals and workouts? Shelly, Sara and I are starting a few new things to help keep us in line.

  • Each Monday you will see a #GoalsCheck post. Just a check-up on where we are with our goals. It can be any goals you have~ fitness, financial, work, etc.
  • #EarnYourShower ~ shout it out on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and get out there and Earn Your Shower!
  • Water check up. It’s important year round, but it weighs more heavily on me as it gets warmer. You have to drink water. Even if you work out indoors, you can still get dehydrated.
  • As always~ motivation and support!

April Arms: Week 1, Shoulder Press

Who’s ready for tank top weather? The first arms exercise is the Shoulder Press. I’m a big fan of this weight workout, I do them several times a week. You can use any weight amount, go slow and work your way up. I use 5 pounds at home and 10-12.5 at the gym. Usually I do 3 reps, 12-15 each rep. Here’s a great video on exactly how to do this exercise.

My #GoalsCheck

  • Blogging: Doing pretty good with my goals there, need to get more organized though.
  • Fitness: Still working those weights, slowly building up. I love the way my arms look!
  • Abs: That’s a constant, some days good, some days bad.
  • Water: Eh, some days good, some days bad. This is a big goal for me to concentrate on!
  • Running: I’m knocking it out here! Set several PR’s so far this year!
  • Full Marathon: This is a category all its own. I’ll be running my first run past 13.1 miles in a few weeks. I’ll keep you posted on that one.

Weekend in Review

Ally and I ran a 5k near our house on Saturday. I love the local races, they are so easy to get to and park. Love seeing people I know! My 5k followed a 6 mile very humid training run. It seems I race better after a long run, not sure why? I hit a PR and 1st place in my age group. I was hoping for under 24 minutes, maybe next time. I’ll take 24:28 and that 1st place medal!

race5

Ally ran a good race. She barfed at about mile 2.9 but kept going and didn’t quit. That makes me a proud mama, even if it wasn’t her best time!

5k race, training and a new recipe!

Today’s 5k race was Ally’s one year running anniversary! She ran her heart out this morning, I’m so proud of her! Packet pick up was a breeze, they were extremely organized!

She came in 2nd place in her age group. Still waiting on results, but her unofficial time was 27:53.

 My training and 5k results

I’m getting ready for another half at the end of this month, the Rock N’ Roll Dallas on March 24. I’ve never run 2 halfs this close together so I don’t really have a plan for miles this month. Today I ended up with 9 miles (6 plus a 5k). Next week I think maybe 10 and then 8 miles, then the next weekend is the race.

I ran a really good pace for the 5k today, but I didn’t place. Let me just say the age group spanned 10 years and I was up against the guys! However it was a really good time for me, I’m happy with it!

Check out my average heart rate for the 3.1 miles!

Trying new foods ~ Spaghetti Squash Casserole

photo-6

Last night’s dinner was a new recipe and it was a major hit! I found the original recipe from Peas and Thank You, and I made a few changes.

  • I added 99% fat free ground turkey
  • Used spinach instead of broccoli
  • I used low fat cream cheese, I’m sure it would have worked with fat free

Anyone tried the lateral jumps from Friday’s kick-off to March Madness? Any awesome Spaghetti Squash recipes I should try?

March Madness!

Happy Friday! I don’t know about you, but this has been a long week. I’m ready to rest. (ha, ha)

It really is March madness around here. Just running a few races this month!

  • 5k March 2, with Ally
  • 4k Tap N’ Run, March 9
  • Rock N Roll Half, March 24
  • 5k March 30, with Ally

The 5k tomorrow at Ally’s school is their 2nd annual, last year this race was her very first 5k. I’m so proud of her!

Yesterday after running 4.7 miles in 34 degrees and a light wind of about 8mph, we had a little plank party!

March brings March Madness and we have a new exercise to introduce…..Lateral jumps! Today’s post is from Sara at She Cooks, She Crafts, She Runs.

Lame What I Ate Wednesday

It’s Wednesday and that means it’s What I Ate Wednesday! But it’s a lame one, since I’m having to send it out before the day is done.

Normally I’m off on Wednesday but tomorrow I work 1/2 day and then I have jury duty. It’s at the Municipal Court, never even been there. Woo-hoo traffic ticket court!

Breakfast was a bagel thin, peanut butter and banana. You’d think I would get tired of it, but I don’t. I’ve never been a big breakfast eater so me eating anything is an improvement. I’ve also been having a mid morning snack most days (yesterday I ate yogurt again!)  I’m trying really hard to like it. The kind with the granola in it really helps.

Today will be a snack type day, since I won’t really sit down and eat lunch. Going to be in the car going from work to jury duty. So, I am trying this Luna bar. I’ve had it in my pantry for a while and kept forgetting to try it.

photo-2

Dinner will most likely be a protein shake. We have church on Wednesday night and then softball practice for Ally!

I’m not very sore today, legs are slowly recovering from the half on Sunday. It was a lot of hills. Now I have a month full of races to get ready for. Ally and I have another 5k this Saturday, it’s her school fundraiser. I have the Rock N Roll half coming up March 24!

Hopefully if you signed up to get my blog by email you got this one today. If you are wondering where I’ve been, I went self-hosted and I was down for about a week. But I’m glad to be back. Most likely you missed my race re-cap of Cowtown. It’s here if you want to catch up!

Did you workout today? Try any new snacks?
